School Facilities

The School of Environmental Studies (SES) is located on the grounds of its major community partner, the Minnesota Zoo. SES opened in 1995, and in 1999 was named a "New American High School" by the U.S. Department of Education because of its new, innovative approach to learning.

As you visit SES, think about how the concepts can apply to your own school. For example:

  • Your community may not have a resource like the Minnesota Zoo, but what resources do you have?
  • In what ways could your school create personal space for students, creating a sense of ownership?
  • How could you create more opportunities and invitations for students and teachers to interact - outside instruction time?
  • If you will be building a new school, how can the facility design respond to and support your learning program?

Through this virtual visit, you will experience the dynamic educational program offered at a small school created on the site of a community partner. KnowledgeWorks Foundation hopes this visit to SES will inspire those that are planning new schools and new facilities.
