The 50-member stakeholder group created by the Ohio Bridges to Opportunity Initiative's (Bridges) has proposed the following set of policy strategies that will enable more working adults to achieve the dream of postsecondary education.
Improve the representation of adult students on the Ohio Partnership for Continued Learning Task Force. The purpose of this state level policy group is to improve policies among providers of preschool through postsecondary education. Known as "P-16" this initiative is focused on ensuring a seamless progression of academic expectations, connected coursework, and credit transfer among education systems, from pre-kindergarten to postsecondary education.
Advocate for legislation that ensures articulation and transfer of industry-recognized coursework and credentials between public adult workforce education centers and two-year campuses. This legislation is vital to the success of adult learning in Ohio, since some adult students never pursue additional credentials because career-related coursework they've completed at one institution is not recognized by another. By strengthening the connections between these institutions, the articulation and transfer policy will make higher education and training shorter and less expensive for low-income students.
Define an adult education system that joins adult educational programs and student and employer needs. Bridges is already conducting this work now through Career Pathways, an initiative that connects adult educational programs with student and employer needs, to create flexible training and degree programs that target working adults.
